Welcome to Annapolis, Maryland.
Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, a state of the United States of America, and the county seat of Anne Arundel County. As of the 2000 census, its population is 35,838. The city is a part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, 28 miles east of Washington D.C..
It is also home to the United States Naval Academy and St. John's College. Annapolis, Maryland's capital, is still quite reminiscent of the booming 18th century seaport. You can still see remnants of colonial life as you stroll the cozy streets and admire the architecture that has stood for more than 200 years.

Known as the sailing capital of America, you are never far from water or boats in Annapolis or anywhere in Anne Arundel County.
Catch the spirit and take a guided tour of the City Harbor or sign aboard a sailing schooner to explore some of the Chesapeake. If on the water is where you really want to be, take a day trip to St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore or charter your own boat and explore some of our 418 miles of shoreline.
If you prefer to just view the water, enjoy a walk along the waterfront. Sample our famous crabs, then listen to our music and enjoy our sunsets and seascapes.
The Maryland state house is the oldest in continuous legislative use in the United States. Construction started in 1772, and the Maryland legislature first met there in 1779. It is topped by the largest wooden dome built without nails in the nation. It was in the Maryland state house that George Washington famously resigned his commission before the Continental Congress on December 23 1783. George Washington, who had argued vigorously for Annapolis to become the permanent home to the United States Capitol, had a strong attachment to the Maryland state house and instructed Pierre L'Enfant to model the dome of the Capitol building in Washington DC after it.
To the north of the state house is a monument to Thurgood Marshall, the first black justice of the US Supreme Court and formerly a Maryland lawyer who won many important civil rights cases.
Plan to stay a few days in one of our many picturesque Bed & Break-fasts or, for the more seafaring, stay in a Boat & Breakfast and wake to the sound of the Bay. Comfortable and affordable hotels can easily be found throughout the city as well. Sleep in, order room service and take advantage of the hospitality you'll find at any Annapolis accommodation.
Whether you're looking for fabulous feasts, great shopping, historical perspectives, sailing or just a get-away, Annapolis is the place to visit.
